The Collaboration Series, Huw Kinch – The Guest 2018

The Collaboration series is a bringing together of winemaking expertise and experience to make individual winemaker expressions of the On Giants’ Shoulders vineyard.

The Guest of 2018 was Huw Kinch, a well-known and experienced winemaker.

Huw is a renowned winemaker with many years’ experience. After graduating from Charles Sturt University he worked in Margaret River, Hunter Valley, Coonawarra, California, Burgundy and rounded this off with a two-year stint at Trinity Hills in the Hawkes Bay.  After ten years working at Escarpment in Martinborough, Huw moved to take on a role for Aotearoa Fine Wines in North Canterbury.  Huws’ experience influenced his winemaking style, with abundant whole bunch, floral aromatics and solid structure defining his wine.

Fruit from a single clone of AM10/5 planted in 1982.  The fruit was diligently hand-harvested by Huw and his dedicated team.  In the winery, bunches were hand-sorted, with 100% whole cluster introduced to the fermenter.  Fermentation started using a pied-de-cuve of indigenous vineyard yeast.  Extraction was gently coaxed by exclusive foot treading, with the wine being pressed after 14 days in skins.  Run to a seasoned 500 litre Puncheon, the wine rested for 18 months in oak, prior to racking by gravity.  The wine was bottled in September 2019 without fining or filtration.

The classy 2018 vintage is a rare red – only 263 bottles were made. From vines planted in 1982 (AM 10/5 clone), it was hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for 18 months in a seasoned French oak puncheon, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is enticingly perfumed, mouthfilling, very savoury and silky, with a lovely spread of youthful cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, good tannin support and a long, harmonious finish. Already delicious, it should break into full stride 2023+.
